GIA Introduces New Descriptions for Laboratory-Grown Diamonds

Beginning October 1, 2025, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will use a new system to describe laboratory-grown diamonds. Instead of using the color and clarity grading developed for natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds will now be classified as “premium” or “standard”, based on color, clarity, and finish. Diamonds that do not meet minimum quality standards will not receive a designation. Current GIA services for lab-grown diamonds will continue until the change takes effect.

With GIA introducing a new grading system for laboratory-grown diamonds, lab-grown stones will now be categorized simply as “premium” or “standard”, rather than using the detailed color and clarity scale developed for natural diamonds. This change reflects the fact that most lab-grown diamonds fall within a narrow range of quality. For consumers, it makes lab-grown diamonds easier to understand, but it also highlights the uniqueness of natural diamonds.

Why Dvinge Chooses Natural Diamonds

At Dvinge, we continue to use natural diamonds because their complexity, rarity, and enduring beauty cannot be fully replicated in a lab-grown stone. Natural diamonds have a rich origin story written over billions of years — from their geological formation deep within the Earth to the journey they take to become a finished gem. This uniqueness is part of what makes each diamond truly one-of-a-kind and why we trust GIA’s natural diamond grading system to evaluate and certify their quality.

About GIA

Founded in 1931, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the world’s leading authority in gemology. GIA invented the 4Cs of diamond quality — Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight — and the International Diamond Grading System™, recognized globally as the standard for evaluating diamonds.

Through research, education, laboratory services, and instrument development, GIA ensures public trust in gems and jewelry by upholding the highest standards of integrity, science, and professionalism.
